Fire Survival Guide

We all try to prevent a fire from starting in our home.
But it only takes an unguarded or careless moment for an accidental
fire to start. A couple of minutes later and your home could be
filled with smoke.  Use Caution and care to prevent fires, but if one
happens, know how to safely survive.
Smoke and fumes can kill, especially  the vapors, fumes &
smoke from some common household furnishings furniture.
You will only have a short time to get out. Use that time,
wisely and above all else, stay Calm.

What to do if fire breaks out

Plan your escape route now. Don't wait until a fire starts.

If you can safely do so, close the door of the room where the fire
has started and close all other doors behind you.
This will help delay the spread of smoke.

Before opening a closed door, use the back of your hand to touch
it. Don't open it if it feels warm - the fire will be on the other side.

Get everyone out as quickly as possible.

Don't try to pick up valuables or possessions.

Make your way out as safely as possible and try not to panic.

Telephone 911 from a neighbors house or the nearest pay phone.

Clearly state the address of the fire.

Never go back into your home until fire department personel has told
        you it is safe.

What to do if you're cut off by fire

It's not easy, but try to remain calm. Panicing when a fire
breaks out can cost you your life, save your energy to help
                              you survive.

If you are prevented from getting out because of flames or
smoke, close the door nearest to the fire and use wet
towels,  sheets to block any openings in the door frame.
This will help stop smoke from spreading into the room.

Go to the window. If the room becomes smoky, drop down
to floor level, it will be easier to breathe because the smoke
                              will rise upwards.

Open the window, try to attract the attention of others who
can contact the fire department . Wait for the Fire Department
to arrive, they should arrive in a matter of minutes.

If you are in immediate danger, drop cushions or bedding to
the ground to break your fall from the window.
Get out feet first and lower yourself to the full length of
your arms before dropping yourself to the ground.

HOTEL FIRE SAFETY TIPS

A vacation somewhere away from it all or perhaps to a resort that is exciting and filled with all those luxuries that will spoil you for a short time. Remember, when you decide to travel, it is up to you to become familiar with your new lodging. It isn't home and you can find yourself easily lost and confused. With all this in mind, here are a few tips that can help you in preparing a fire safe trip.

PLAN AHEAD!

  • When you call to make your reservations, find out if the property has smoke detectors and fire sprinklers.

  •
  • Upon arrival learn where the exits are. Don't wait until you unpack, DO IT NOW! Before you unlock your door, look to the left & right and locate two exits from your floor.

  •
  • Walk to each one, counting the number of doors between your room & the exit.

  • The exits will be hard to find in a fire because of all the smoke unless you know their exact locations.

  • Find the fire alarms and fire extinguishers.

  • Refresh your memory on how to use one.

  •  NEVER smoke in bed. Careless handling of smoking materials is still a major cause of fires.

  •
  • Become familiar with the window and air conditioning systems in your room.

  • Know how to shut the A.C. off to prevent it from bringing smoke into your room,
if there is a fire in the hotel.
